Artist Statement - Susan Purney Mark
Over the part 30 years my primary focus has been on fabric and stitch, using needle and thread to place lines, dots, patterns and marks onto the surface - often combining paint and ink or other surface techniques. Sometimes these have been recognizable elements but more often they are meant to convey emotions, narratives, and intricate details, creating a tactile language.
Each mark holds my energy, a testament to both creativity and personal touch, transforming my cloth into a canvas.
When working with another artist in collaboration, I need to be cognizant of their story on the surface and honour their voice and yet add enough of myself that we both work in harmony. Consider a duet in music - sometimes one sound or instrument is more clear and other times the second sounds are dominant - From a Distance is working together where we are both the storyteller, leaving our marks as the narrative.
